Residential Dumpster Rental across the western suburbs
Homes around here vary enough that one container does not fit all of them. The tight residential driveways near downtown Naperville want a 10 or a 15 and a driver who takes it slowly. The larger properties in neighborhoods like White Eagle and Ashbury have room for a 20, and sometimes an HOA with its own rules. The first thing we ask on the phone is what your driveway looks like.
Most residential jobs are one of three things: a cleanout (a garage, a basement, or a whole house before a move or a sale), a remodel (kitchen, bath, flooring, roof), or the yard — landscaping, a tree coming down, storm cleanup. Each wants a different size and a different talk about weight. The size comparison covers the numbers; the phone call covers your job.

What actually fills a residential container
Garage, basement and estate cleanouts lead the way: furniture, boxes, mattresses, the contents of a shed. Kitchen and bath remodels are next — cabinets, tile, drywall, a tub. Then the outdoor jobs: shingles off a roof, an old deck or fence, a landscaping redo, a patio broken up for a new one.
In Naperville, household trash is a City contract with Groot. It takes two bulk items a week and one appliance (call Groot first), but remodel debris only in small amounts — drywall or paneling in no more than two 32-gallon cans or two bundles a week, and two rolls of carpet. Tires, hazardous liquids and landscape materials cannot go with normal trash at all. Wheaton's contract hauler charges $17 a cubic yard plus a $24 pickup charge for do-it-yourself remodel debris, and Bolingbrook's charges $15.75 a yard with a two-yard minimum. Anything bigger, heavier or sooner than that is what a residential roll-off is for.
Driveway placement, street rules and HOAs
On your own driveway in Naperville we found no City permit for a roll-off. Boards can go under the dumpster to protect the surface, and the driver sets the container where you want to load it. The street, parkway, alley or sidewalk is another matter: any obstruction of the City right-of-way needs a Right-of-Way permit, applied for through the City's Civic Access portal with a map showing where the dumpster goes. It costs $88, or $120 if part of the street is closed, plus a $5,000 maintenance bond, and review takes about 14 calendar days. The code keeps at least 18 feet of roadway open, limits you to the street frontage of the work site without the neighbor's consent, and wants warnings, barricades and lights where needed (§ 9-1A-10).
Two more things. If you live in a subdivision with an HOA, check its rules on containers before you book a longer rental. And the other towns differ: Glen Ellyn bans obstructing the street or parkway, North Aurora bans containers in the right-of-way and allows them on a house lot only for a cleanup or the life of a building permit, Wheaton wants a street occupancy permit, and Downers Grove charges $85 for parkway access. Each town page says what that town's code asks for.

Residential dumpster rental — the Illinois specifics
Illinois keeps a list of things that cannot go to a landfill, and a mixed roll-off load ends up at one. Landscape waste has been banned since 1990, lead-acid car batteries since 1990, whole tires since 1994, motor oil since 1996, and fridges, freezers, A/C units, water heaters and other large appliances since 1994 unless the Freon, mercury switches and PCB parts have been removed. Since January 1, 2026, TVs, computers, monitors, printers and other covered electronics are banned too. Keep all of those out of the container. Battery and tire retailers take old ones back, and Illinois EPA points stripped appliances to scrap yards. The Naperville Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 156 Fort Hill Dr takes oil-based paint, automotive fluids, batteries, pool chemicals and mercury free from Illinois residents on Saturdays and Sundays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The what can and cannot go in guide covers where each banned item goes instead.

Answers
Residential Dumpster Rental — your questions answered
Will the dumpster damage my driveway?
Not if it is set properly. Ask for boards under the dumpster and the driver puts them down. Tell us before delivery if a surface worries you — fresh concrete, a cracked slab, soft ground — and we will plan around it.
Can I put the dumpster on the street instead?
In Naperville, only with a City Right-of-Way permit — $88, or $120 if part of the street is closed, plus a $5,000 bond and about 14 days for review. Glen Ellyn bans obstructing the street or parkway, and North Aurora bans containers in the right-of-way. The driveway is always simpler.
Does my HOA have a say?
Often, yes. Some subdivisions have rules that cover containers in driveways. We do not know your HOA's rules — check them before you book, especially for a longer rental.
Can I put old appliances in the dumpster?
Small non-hazardous appliances, yes. Fridges, freezers, A/C units, water heaters and other large appliances only if the Freon, mercury and PCB parts have been removed — Illinois has banned them from landfills otherwise since 1994. Groot picks up one appliance a week for Naperville residents at no extra charge if you call first, and that is often the simplest route.
How long can I keep the container?
The standard rental is 3 to 7 days. If the job runs on, call and we extend it at a daily or weekly rate.
Do you serve outside Naperville?
Yes — sixteen more cities and villages across DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will counties, from West Chicago to Plainfield. Each has its own page. Several license the haulers that work inside their limits — we hold ours — and we say so plainly on each page.
